Elevators are a part of everyday life for families living in urban areas, and while they are safe when used correctly, children need to learn specific elevator safety practices. Here are some important safety guidelines parents can teach their kids to ensure they navigate elevators safely.

Teach Proper Elevator Etiquette

One of the first rules children should learn is to allow people to exit the elevator before entering. This basic courtesy keeps the flow of passengers smooth and helps prevent accidents. Rushing in or out of an elevator can cause injuries, and the gap between the elevator and the floor is particularly dangerous for small children. Teach them to wait until the elevator is completely empty before stepping inside.

Supervise Small Children in Elevators

Children under 12 years of age should never use an elevator alone. It's essential for parents or guardians to accompany small children to ensure they follow safe practices. Not only does this reduce the risk of accidents, but it also provides an opportunity for children to learn by watching adults use elevators responsibly.

Avoid Pressing Unnecessary Buttons

Elevator buttons can be tempting for kids, but pressing buttons randomly can disrupt elevator operations, trigger alarms, or activate emergency services unnecessarily. Explain to children that pressing only the button for their desired floor keeps the elevator operating smoothly. Show them the emergency button and phone, and explain that these are only for emergencies.

Practice Safe Entry and Exit

Help children understand the importance of watching their step when entering and exiting the elevator. Small gaps between the elevator and the building floor, as well as loose clothing or shoelaces, can pose risks. Encourage kids to step carefully and avoid letting anything dangle near these gaps.

Keep Hands and Objects Away from Doors

One key rule for elevator safety is to keep hands, feet and objects clear of elevator doors. Kids should know not to lean on doors, attempt to stop them from closing with their body, or touch the doors as they open and close. Even though modern elevators are equipped with motion sensors, they may not always detect smaller children, so staying away from doors is critical.

Lead by Example

Kids look to their parents and caregivers as role models. Practicing safe habits yourself - waiting for people to exit, pressing only necessary buttons, and maintaining a safe distance from doors - will set a strong example for children. This way, they'll be more likely to remember and follow these rules.

Reinforce Basic Safety Rules

Teach your child some simple, actionable safety guidelines, including:

  • Press Only Necessary Buttons
This avoids unnecessary delays and prevents accidental emergency calls.
  • Stay Clear of the Door Sensors
Demonstrate where the sensors are located, so they know to avoid them.
  • Know When to Use the Emergency Call Button
Show your child where the emergency button is and how to use it if needed.
  • Stay Calm and Ask for Help
Explain that if they ever find themselves trapped, staying calm is essential. Show them how to use the phone in the elevator and what information to provide, like their location and any injuries.
Emergency Preparedness

In case of an emergency, kids should know key emergency contact information and basic communication skills. Encourage them to memorize a parent's phone number and to stay calm and wait for help if trapped. Remind them that elevators are equipped with plenty of air circulation, so they don't need to worry about running out of air.

Keeping Every Ride Safe

By teaching kids these essential safety habits, you're setting them up for confident, safe and responsible elevator use. Elevators are marvels of modern technology, but like any machine, they require a level of respect and caution. With a bit of guidance, kids can navigate elevator rides safely and develop lifelong habits that prioritize safety.
